HAMPTON, Va. - Amber Bland scored 25 points and led three North Carolina A&T (17-11, 12-5 MEAC) players in double figures as the Lady Aggies completed the season sweep of Hampton (14-12, 10-7 MEAC) , winning 73-63 Monday night at the Hampton University Convocation Center.
Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va./Phoebus HS) hit a jumper with 13:50 left in the game to take the lead, 42-41. Brittanie Taylor-James quickly answered on the other end, giving the Lady Aggies a lead that they would not surrender for the rest of the game. HU was able to get within four, 60-64, on an Ashlee Finley (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) lay-up with 4:12 left, but Taylor-James made good on two free-throws with 2:57 left, and the Lady Pirates saw the Aggie lead grow to 10.
The blue kept it close in the first half. Finley nailed a lay-up with 14:49 left in the opening period to tie the game at 10-all. The Aggies went on an 8-2 run, before lay-ups by Finley and Artavia Burns (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) put Hampton up 25-24 with 4:06 ticks left. Nevertheless, N.C. A&T scored six unanswered points to hold a seven point advantage, 35-28, at intermission.
Hampton shot 31.4 percent (22-of-70) from the floor for the game and scored 12 points on 16 turnovers. Subsequently the Lady Aggies were able to connect 21 points off of 23 Hampton turnovers. The Lady Pirates also outrebounded N.C. A&T 58-70 and the Hampton reserves outscored the Aggie bench 33-6.
Rachel Butler (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) and Chinyere Ukoh (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge HS) led four Pirates in double figures with 11 points each. Finley and Shahara Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) added 10 points respectively. The Lady Pirates were led on the glass by Finley and Butler, both with a game-high nine boards.
The Lady Pirates will play their last game of the regular season on Wednesday, February 28 at 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
